Worknice and Martian Logic are both Australian HRIS platforms sold into schools, but the decision between them is really whether you are adding an HR layer or replacing your stack. Worknice sits above the payroll and school management system you already run. Martian Logic replaces three to six products with one platform. Most schools only need the layer.
Key takeaways
- Worknice adds an HR, onboarding, and compliance layer above your existing payroll, so the systems your finance team already trusts stay where they are.
- Martian Logic states it “typically replaces 3 to 6 products”, which is a larger and slower change to make across a school.
- Both connect to school management systems. Martian Logic names six including Veracross, Synergetic, TASS and FACTS. Worknice delivers Veracross, Synergetic and TASS connections during implementation.
- Independent school enrolments grew 15.3% between 2021 and 2025, the fastest of any school sector, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
- Neither vendor publishes a per-employee price, so a genuine cost comparison needs a written quote from both.
How should you choose an HRIS for your school?
Every school already runs payroll and a school management system, and both are entrenched, so the first question is not which HRIS is better but how much of that you are willing to replace. An HRIS that sits above them is a small change. A platform that absorbs them is a large one.
That fork matters more in schools than in most sectors, because a school’s payroll carries award interpretation, leave accruals, and years of history that nobody wants to migrate mid-year. So the cost of replacing it is rarely just the licence fee. Our guide to choosing an HRIS for Australian private schools covers the wider shortlist if you are still at that stage.
Scale is the second factor, and the independent sector is where it bites hardest. In 2025 there were 9,673 schools in Australia teaching 4,160,918 students, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, and independent enrolments grew 15.3% between 2021 and 2025 while government enrolments fell slightly. More enrolments mean more hiring, more Working with Children Checks, and more teacher registrations to track.
Four things decide it: how much of your stack changes, school system integration, compliance depth, and what each vendor publishes rather than saving for a sales call. The last one matters more than it sounds, because a price held back for a sales call cannot be compared.
Worknice vs Martian Logic compared for Australian schools in 2026
1. Worknice
Best for: Schools keeping their existing payroll and school management system, that want a focused HR, onboarding, and compliance record above them.
Typical customer size / segment: Australian schools alongside other mid-sized organisations. In a school that means everyone on the books, not just teachers: classroom and support staff, boarding and grounds teams, casual relief, and volunteers.
How much of your stack changes: The least of the two, because Worknice adds a layer and replaces nothing. Payroll, rostering, and any learning platform all stay put. So the change lands on the HR team rather than on finance and timetabling too.
School system integration: Available. Worknice connects to Veracross, Synergetic and TASS, with the connection delivered as part of your school’s implementation rather than sitting in a marketplace.
Payroll approach: Integrates with existing payroll rather than running it. Direct integrations cover Xero, MYOB AccountRight, Micropay and KeyPay. Other systems connect through Zapier or the public API, which are different propositions worth separating.
Key strengths:
- Automated expiry alerts across certificates, licences and training, which suits a mixed workforce of teaching, support, boarding, and grounds staff.
- Onboarding varies by role and location. It builds an electronic employee file, collects the paperwork, and generates the contract in one click.
- Two-way leave with your payroll system. Staff request against the balances payroll already holds, an admin sends approved leave across in a batch, and changes made in payroll flow back.
Watch-outs: Worknice is built for organisations of more than 50 people, so a small school running a handful of staff is likely better served by something lighter. Worknice also does not publish a price, so early budgeting takes a conversation.
Pricing: Not published. Contact for a quote.
2. Martian Logic
Best for: Schools that want one platform covering HR, payroll, rostering and learning, connected to their school management system.
Typical customer size / segment: Martian Logic describes itself as serving “mid-market organisations across Australia and New Zealand”, including “more than 100 independent schools”, checked 21 September 2026. It names The Southport School, Camberwell Girls Grammar School and Trinity Grammar School.
How much of your stack changes: Substantially more, since Martian Logic states it “typically replaces 3 to 6 products”. A hybrid model takes Core HR and selected modules while keeping what works.
School system integration: Yes. Martian Logic states it “integrates with six school management systems including Veracross, Synergetic, TASS and FACTS”. The word “including” means the list is illustrative, so ask which six they are.
Payroll approach: All-in-one with bundled payroll, including Single Touch Payroll. Its integration list covers Aurion, Preceda, Sage MicrOpay, MYOB PayGlobal, ADP, Xero, Definitiv and KeyPay.
Key strengths:
- Four suites on one system: Core HR, payroll, workforce management with rostering, and an LMS.
- Compliance records stay audit-ready, with checks verified at recruitment, tracked to renewal, and approval history on the record.
- A live org chart links positions to employees, and AI drafts job descriptions.
Watch-outs: Independent review coverage is very thin. G2 carries two reviews, against 248 for ELMO and 239 for Employment Hero. So there is little user feedback to test its claims against, which makes reference schools worth asking for. Replacing three to six products is a bigger project than adding one, and it moves payroll onto the same vendor and release timetable as HR. Martian Logic publishes no customer count either, so its scale outside schools is unknown.
Pricing: Quoted per organisation, based on configuration and headcount. Martian Logic states there is usually no setup cost.
Which should your school choose?
The choice turns on how much change your school can absorb in one year, not on which feature list is longer. Choose Worknice if your payroll and school management system are settled, because the gap then is the HR record, onboarding, and compliance tracking around them. Choose Martian Logic if you want one platform to run HR, payroll, rostering, and learning on a single invoice.
Both answers are common, and the second is not a smaller school. A school replacing an ageing payroll at the same time as its HR system has a genuine reason to consolidate. However, most schools are not doing that in any given year, which is why the layer is the more frequent starting point.
Frequently asked questions
Does Worknice integrate with Veracross or Synergetic?
Yes. Worknice connects to Veracross, Synergetic and TASS, delivered as part of a school’s implementation. Martian Logic states it integrates with six school management systems including those two. Confirm scope and timing for your specific system with both vendors before you sign.
Can I keep my existing school payroll with either platform?
Yes, in both cases. Worknice never replaces payroll and integrates with Xero, MYOB AccountRight, Micropay and KeyPay. Martian Logic offers a hybrid model, taking Core HR and selected modules while keeping your payroll, or an all-in-one bundle that includes it.
Is Martian Logic an Australian company?
Yes. Martian Logic describes itself as an Australian HRIS covering recruitment, onboarding, Core HR, payroll, workforce management and an LMS. It was founded in 2003 and sells into Australia and New Zealand, according to its own website, checked 21 September 2026.
How many schools use Martian Logic?
Martian Logic states it is used by “more than 100 independent schools”, checked 21 September 2026. It publicly names The Southport School, Camberwell Girls Grammar School and Trinity Grammar School among its customers. It does not publish a total customer count across all industries.
How much do Worknice and Martian Logic cost?
Neither Worknice nor Martian Logic publishes a per-employee price. Martian Logic quotes per organisation, based on configuration and headcount, and says there is usually no setup cost. Worknice quotes on request. Because both are quote-based, get written quotes before comparing them on cost.
