Both Rippling and Employment Hero position themselves as all-in-one HR platforms that expect you to use their payroll, so the differences lie in breadth of features, geographic reach, and the size of company each suits. Rippling is American and spans 41 countries. Employment Hero is Australian and, on its own published numbers, a small-business platform.

Key takeaways

  • Both platforms run Australian payroll natively, so the bundled versus integrated question that usually separates HR systems will not decide this one for you.
  • Rippling reaches well past HR, managing devices, controlling app access, issuing corporate cards, tracking expenses, and paying bills on the same platform.
  • Employment Hero is Australian, founded in Sydney in 2014, while Rippling is American, founded in San Francisco in 2012. That matters most when you test award interpretation.
  • Employment Hero reports 350,000 or more businesses and 2 to 2.5 million users, which works out at roughly 6 to 7 users each. It markets to “small and medium-sized businesses”, but that ratio describes a small-business customer base.
  • Rippling publishes no customer count or seat figure. So you cannot check its segment fit the way you can with Employment Hero.
  • Each vendor runs a comparison page arguing the other one falls short, so read both of them and then test whatever actually matters to you.

How should you compare Rippling and Employment Hero?

Both of these are all-in-one platforms that run Australian payroll natively, which means the bundled versus integrated question that normally sorts HR software has settled itself before you start. What is left is scope and geography: how far past HR each one reaches, which countries it covers, and the size of customer it actually serves.

Scope is the sharper of the two, because Rippling sells HR, IT and finance as a single system, so adopting it means you also manage devices, control access, and issue corporate cards beside your employee records. Employment Hero stays inside employment instead, where it advertises roles, onboards new starters, runs pay, and hands out benefits to staff.

Geography is the second difference, and for most readers it will not matter at all. Australia had 996,203 employing businesses at 30 June 2026, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, and if yours employs in one country then the gap between 6 markets and 41 is academic. However, suppose you open an office in Singapore next year. It stops being academic the moment you do.

There is a third case, and it is the one neither vendor is built for. Suppose you employ 200 to 5,000 people in Australia, you already run a payroll your finance team trusts, and you have no intention of moving it. Neither of these two answers that, because both are built on the assumption that payroll arrives with them. Four things separate the options that do: scope beyond HR, country coverage, who each vendor demonstrably serves, and what each one publishes rather than saving for a sales call.

Rippling vs Employment Hero compared for Australian buyers in 2026

1. Worknice

Best for: Australian organisations of 200 to 5,000 people that want HR depth, not payroll, devices, or cards.

Typical customer size / segment: Australian mid-to-large organisations. That is a stated target rather than a published average, so weigh it accordingly.

Payroll approach: Integrates with existing payroll rather than running it. Direct integrations cover Xero, MYOB AccountRight, Micropay and KeyPay, which is Employment Hero Pay. Other systems connect through Zapier or the public API.

Key strengths:

  • It runs onboarding workflows, stores compliance documents, tracks licence expiry, and keeps an org chart current for Australian conditions.
  • Leave runs two ways with your payroll system. Staff request leave against the balances payroll already holds, an admin sends approved leave across in a batch, and changes made in payroll flow back.
  • KeyPay is a direct integration, so Employment Hero’s payroll engine can sit underneath Worknice rather than competing with it.

Watch-outs: Worknice runs no payroll, no IT, and no finance products. So if you want one vendor and one invoice, look at the other two. It operates in Australia only. That rules out multi-country employment. Worknice also publishes no price, so you will need to ask.

Pricing: Not published. Contact Worknice for a quote.

2. Rippling

Best for: Organisations that want HR, IT, and finance on one platform, or that hire across multiple countries.

Typical customer size / segment: Rippling publishes no customer count and no seat figure. Its Capterra Australia listing states it serves “startups, small, midsize, and enterprise businesses across industries”, checked 22 September 2026. That covers the whole market. It tells you little about fit.

Payroll approach: All-in-one with bundled payroll. The Australian coverage is genuine rather than a localisation veneer. Rippling’s payroll page states it calculates PAYGW and submits STP2 to the Australian Taxation Office. It also generates ABA files, and pays net wages, superannuation, and taxes. In addition, it integrates with Xero, QuickBooks, and NetSuite for accounting.

Key strengths:

  • Rippling manages identity and devices, controls access, issues corporate cards, tracks expenses, runs procurement, and pays bills, none of which an HR-only vendor touches.
  • A change in one module syncs across the platform in real time. Custom workflows can also span HR, IT, finance, and third-party apps.
  • Rippling states you can hire contractors across 185 or more countries and pay them on the platform.

Watch-outs: You buy the IT and finance products whether you want them or not. So the value rests on retiring several systems. Rippling is also US-headquartered, founded in 2012 in San Francisco. So ask how deeply it interprets your particular awards rather than assuming it does. Because it publishes no customer-size figure, you cannot check the segment fit yourself.

Pricing: Its Capterra Australia listing shows $12.00 per user per month, with the currency unmarked. Checked 22 September 2026, so contact Rippling for an Australian quote.

3. Employment Hero

Best for: Small Australian and New Zealand businesses that want one local vendor to recruit, onboard, pay, and support staff.

Typical customer size / segment: Employment Hero reports 350,000 or more businesses worldwide. Its own user figure changes depending which page you read. The about page says “2.5 million + Active users”, while its Capterra Australia listing says “2M users globally”. Both were checked on 21 September 2026, and they imply roughly 6 to 7 users per business. Active users are a subset of employees, so treat that ratio as a ceiling.

Payroll approach: All-in-one with bundled payroll, including native Australian payroll.

Key strengths:

  • Built and headquartered in Australia, founded in Sydney in 2014. Award interpretation sits in the core product. It is not bolted on as a localisation.
  • The company passed A$300 million in annual recurring revenue in October 2025. It was also EBITDA positive year to date.
  • An employee superapp carries payslips, leave balances, and wellness perks in one place, which is unusual in this category.

Watch-outs: The implied average customer is very small, at 6 to 7 users per business. So an organisation of several hundred people sits well outside the segment the product was actually built around, whatever the “and medium” in its own description suggests. Coverage is narrower too, reaching only Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Malaysia, Singapore, and Canada, which matters if you expand. On Capterra Australia it scores 4.4 from 239 reviews, with Customer Service its lowest subscore at 4.1.

Pricing: No Australian dollar pricing appears on its own site, so ask for a written quote. Its Capterra Australia listing shows USD 10.00 per month, usage based, checked 21 September 2026.

Which should you choose, Rippling or Employment Hero?

The honest answer turns less on features than on how much of your stack you are willing to hand to one vendor. Choose Rippling if you want a single system to run HR, hand out laptops, and settle expenses, or if you employ across several countries. Choose Employment Hero if you are a small Australian business that wants local depth from a local vendor. Suppose instead you employ a few hundred people in Australia and already run a payroll you trust: you want neither the IT stack nor a migration, so a focused local HRIS fits better than either.

Both named vendors publish a comparison page arguing the other falls short. Neither is a neutral source. So pick the two or three capabilities that actually decide it for you. Then test those against your own awards, your own countries, and your own payroll. Our buyer’s guide for mid-sized Australian companies sets out the questions worth asking.

Frequently asked questions

Does Rippling do Australian payroll?

Yes, and natively rather than as a formatted global product. Rippling’s Australian payroll page states it calculates PAYGW and submits STP Phase 2 to the Australian Taxation Office. It also generates ABA files, and pays net wages, superannuation, and taxes, checked 22 September 2026.

Is Rippling or Employment Hero better for Australian award interpretation?

Employment Hero builds in Australia and treats award interpretation as core. Rippling runs Australian payroll natively, but from a US head office. Neither one publishes a comparable breakdown of its award coverage. Because awards vary so widely, test both against your own. Do not rely on either vendor’s own comparison page.

How many countries does each platform cover?

Rippling’s Capterra Australia listing shows availability in 41 countries. Rippling also states it supports contractors in 185 or more countries. Employment Hero reaches Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Malaysia, Singapore, and Canada, all checked in September 2026.

What size business is Employment Hero built for?

Employment Hero describes itself as “a leading employment platform for small and medium-sized businesses”. It reports 350,000 or more businesses, and between 2 and 2.5 million users depending which of its own sources you read. That works out at roughly 6 to 7 users each, so on its own numbers it is a small-business platform.

Can I keep my existing payroll with Rippling or Employment Hero?

Both are built to run payroll themselves, so keeping a separate payroll system works against their design and their pricing. If your current payroll stays, you want an HRIS that reads it, writes to it, and leaves it alone. Worknice is built that way, and these two are not.
